FDA MedWatch: Hand Sanitizers: FDA Updates On Recalls

MedWatch - The FDA Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program
MedWatch Safety Alert was added to the FDA Recalls webpage.

TOPIC: Hand Sanitizers: FDA Updates on Recalls Due to Dangerous, Potential Presence of Methanol (Wood Alcohol)

AUDIENCE: Consumer, Health Professional

ISSUE: FDA is warning consumers and health care providers that the agency has seen a sharp increase in hand sanitizer products that are labeled to contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) but that have tested positive for methanol contamination.
The agency is aware of people ingesting hand sanitizer products contaminated with methanol that has led to recent adverse events including blindness, hospitalizations and death.

Methanol is not an acceptable ingredient for hand sanitizers and must not be used due to its toxic effects. FDA maintains a list of FDA-tested and recalled hand sanitizers on the agency’s website, which will be continually updated as dangerous products are discovered. FDA’s investigation of methanol in certain hand sanitizers is ongoing.

Do not use any products on this list of hand sanitizers with potential methanol contamination, and continue checking this list often as it is being updated daily. This list outlines the information on hand sanitizer labels for consumers to use to identify a product that has been tested by FDA and found to contain methanol. FDA advises consumers not to use hand sanitizers from these companies, or products with these names or NDC numbers.

The agency will provide additional information as it becomes available.

Recent recalls include:

BACKGROUND: Substantial methanol exposure can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent damage to the nervous system or death. Although all persons using these products on their hands are at risk, young children who accidentally ingest these products and adolescents and adults who drink these products as an alcohol (ethanol) substitute, are most at risk for methanol poisoning.

RECOMMENDATION: FDA reminds consumers to wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially:
  • After going to the bathroom
  • Before eating
  • After coughing, sneezing, or blowing one’s nose
If soap and water are not readily available, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend consumers use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent ethanol.

Health professionals and consumers are encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of these products to the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program:
  • Complete and submit the report online.
  • Download form or call 1-800-332-1088 to request a reporting form, then complete and return to the address on the form, or submit by fax to 1-800-FDA-0178.

The USDA has issued some updates on the hundreds of reports from across the country about those mysterious, unsolicited seeds that showed up in the mail.

Those packages of seeds, many of which originated from China and various Central Asian countries, aroused widespread suspicion and conspiracy theories. The USDA announced last week some preliminary findings on samples of those seeds.

According to Reuters, the USDA has identified several different species in those seed samples, all of which are fairly common. The USDA’s update mentions flowers, herbs, and vegetables, including mustard, cabbage, morning glory, rose, hibiscus, mint, rosemary, and lavender. Some officials remain concerned about the possibility of damage to American crops; Robin Pruisner, the state seed control official at the Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship in Iowa, told Reuters that some descriptions have indicated purple seed coatings.

Those coatings are a common way to deliver herbicides and insecticides to plants, and theoretically a coating of this sort could kill plants that are not genetically modified to be immune to it. That said, the USDA has not found any indication that these seeds are coated with anything—at least, they haven’t mentioned it—and the USDA maintains that there’s nothing more nefarious here than a mild e-commerce scam.

The USDA says it currently believes that the seeds are part of a “brushing scam,” in which online sellers ship cheap, lightweight packages to customers who never ordered them. This allows them to then post “verified” reviews of those products, because they can prove that said products actually were delivered to a specific address. It is, as far as online scams go, pretty innocuous, though it does reveal how much personal information (name and address) is held and used improperly by these companies.

Seeds would be a decent brushing scam product, because they’re so small and light that they would cost very little to ship.

Perhaps the larger problem here is the wide availability of foreign seeds online. Marketplaces like AliExpress, Wish, eBay, and Amazon sell many seeds which ship from foreign companies. Many of these are in China, because many companies that sell everything on these online marketplaces are located there, but foreign seeds are not subject to USDA oversight as American seeds are. In other words, you don’t really know what you’ll be getting, and there are plenty of customer reviews indicating that. Worse, foreign seeds could be invasive species which actively harm the environment in the US.

As a result, state and federal agriculture departments are asking anyone who’s received mystery seeds not to plant them—even if there’s a pretty good chance they’re just cabbage seeds.

Researchers Say We Need a Plan to Combat This Crazy Toxic Weed

Researchers Say We Need a Plan to Combat This Crazy Toxic Weed

Of all the invasive plants out there, it’s the chokers—the ones that strangle native plants—which might be the most viscerally scary.

Among those is one not well known in North America: Mimosa diplotricha, commonly known as the giant sensitive plant. Researchers at the Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI), a nonprofit focusing on agricultural and environmental issues in the developing world, studied the spread of this plant in eastern and southern Africa, and say there is an “urgent need” for some kind of control strategy.

The giant sensitive plant is a large, bushy, thorny shrub native to Central and South America; it gets its name because its leaves, if touched, will suddenly curl up as if recoiling from stimulus. It produces long stems full of extremely sharp thorns, along with lots and lots of seedpods, meaning that it reproduces quickly and efficiently. It was first found in the tropical Pacific in the early- to mid-1900s; by the 1970s, it was considered a serious weed in Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, Taiwan, Fiji, and elsewhere.

The problem with this plant is that it grows huge and sprawling, and spreads quickly throughout farms, fields, and vacant land, according to this new study. It has had a hugely negative effect on the yield of crops, including some staple or otherwise vital crops like sugarcane and cassava, crowding out the crops. It also climbs and smothers larger plants like palm trees, reminiscent of kudzu. It’s been shown to have “serious negative impacts” on farms growing tea, coffee, pineapple, coconut, and rubber.

It’s also extremely difficult and sometimes dangerous to eradicate. The thorns are very sharp and can injure farmworkers who try to slice through it. All parts of the plant are believed to be toxic to most livestock, including cattle, sheep, and hogs, and it reduces grazing land for those animals. Herbicides aren’t particularly effective, requiring repeated doses, and in much of the areas where it’s a real problem, repeated herbicide use isn’t affordable. Slashing and burning has been found to be the most effective, but can be disastrous for the environment.

The new study found that the giant sensitive plant is widespread and common throughout parts of Ethiopia, Tanzania, Malawi, Uganda, and Rwandi, with sightings further south and east in other countries. People surveyed in those areas reported that the invasive plant has made it difficult to move either people or livestock, and that it reduced native grasses, trees, and shrubs. Over half had to pay workers to somehow get rid of the plant.

The study finds that there needs to be work to contain and combat the giant sensitive plant’s spread, but that there isn’t an ideal solution. Herbicides aren’t approved in most countries for use on this weed and are expensive besides. Burning has major environmental downsides. Some, including the United States government (the plant is found in territories Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands), are looking into biological controls, like small lice-like insects that feed on the plants. “Mimosa diplotricha is already present in a number of countries in eastern  and southern Africa and likely to expand its range, exacerbating biodiversity loss and further  reducing crop yields and rangeland productivity,” the researchers write.https://modernfarmer.com/2020/08/researchers-say-we-need-a-plan-to-combat-this-crazy-toxic-weed/

The Fight Over Raw Butter

THIS WEEK IN FOOD

Aug. 10th

Welcome to the weekly Modern Farmer newsletter. We’ll bring you features, recipes and gardening tips, along with food and farming news from around the world.

The fight over raw butter. In 1987, the FDA banned farmers from selling raw milk and other unpasteurized dairy products across state lines. To the chagrin of those who prefer these creamy unpasteurized products, this included raw butter. A group of raw dairy producers and a non-profit that represents them are now suing the FDA to try to get the interstate prohibition lifted.

No soil? No problem. For those who want to start a garden but don’t have a patch of dirt, the answer to their woes might be hydroponics. This technique swaps soil for nutrient rich water and it requires minimal space. It also uses 90 percent less water and grows faster than traditional methods. Here's our guide to building your own hydroponics system on the cheap.

Where will we slaughter our lambs?! JBS, the giant Brazilian meat company, has plans to convert one of the largest lamb processing plants in the country into a beef facility. The plan would leave many sheep farmers across the western US, who depend on the plant, without somewhere to slaughter their lambs. The episode has attracted the attention of lawmakers in Washington DC, who have asked the Department of Justice to intervene in the acquisition over fears it could lead to the depletion of a domestic market that competes directly with JBS.

As always, we love hearing from you, so please send us an email at info@modfarmer.com or let your opinion be known in our comments section.

Cheers,
