This
workshop will address the challenges of fostering sustainable firewood use for
heating and cooking in households of the UN Economic Commission for Europe
(UNECE) region. It will provide a platform for exchanging experiences
throughout the region on how to improve wood energy applications, and
participants will be invited to develop guidance for providing an enabling
policy framework to optimize the use of wood as a clean and healthy source of
energy for households. The workshop will result in two outcomes: a collection
of best practices; and a roadmap for policy makers. Participants will review
and discuss the draft documents, which will be provided prior to the workshop.
Participants from development agencies, academia, and intergovernmental and
non-governmental organizations addressing heating and cooking are expected to
attend the workshop. A parallel exhibition will be held from 13-27 February
2015, in order to raise awareness regarding the complexity of, and potential
improvement in, firewood use in households, including regarding health and
resource efficiency. It will showcase the different aspects of efficient
firewood use in households, encouraging people to learn about wood, where its
energy is stored, how it is transformed to heat and how to preserve this heat
for household use.

The
Third Global Scientific Conference on Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) is the
result of a Netherlands-led initiative aimed at simultaneously addressing the
themes of agriculture, food security and climate change. The Conference will
continue the work of the first and second conferences, held in Wageningen, the
Netherlands, in 2011, and Davis, California, US, in 2013. The initiative has
structured its work around two parallel processes: one to address the science
of CSA and the other to focus on policy. The conference, which will focus on
vulnerable countries and populations, filling research gaps and closing the
science-policy divide, will be an opportunity for researchers to update
knowledge of CSA and make recommendations to policymakers. The Food and
Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the CGIAR Consortium are among the
conference organizers.

Meeting
under the theme 'Unlocking Africa's Energy Potential,' this forum will bring
together relevant stakeholders to discuss the policy, technology and financing
aspects of unlocking Africa's energy potential. More specifically, it will
address: how to meet the energy demand of Africa's economies and close the
energy access gap; the ideal energy mix for Africa's energy future; whether the
gap between existing infrastructure and investment required to increase energy
accessibility can be bridged; and whether African governments are ready to provide
the necessary leadership and governance to bring about an energy revolution in
Africa. The forum also aims to demonstrate the growing significance and
viability of business and investment in the African energy sector. It will
include plenary sessions, panel discussions, keynotes addresses and business
networking programmes on: energy security in the changing African energy
landscape; building capacity for power sector growth; the global fossil fuel
industry and oil and gas development in Africa; ensuring clean, safe and
affordable energy for all; renewable energy potential and trends; sharing of
best practices, technology and alignment of energy policies; financing energy
systems of Africa; fostering corporate social responsibility and public-private
partnerships; and promoting the role of youth and women in Africa's energy
future. The forum will offer a platform for discourse across sectors and groups
without focusing on an "ideological debate on public versus private
investment or fossil fuel versus renewable energy". Ultimately, the forum
aims to catalyze a new energy paradigm to serve as a basis for sustainable
growth of Africa. The meeting is being co-hosted by Global Energy Initiative

The
International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the French Government, with
the regional Government of Martinique, will convene this meeting on
accelerating the uptake of renewables on islands. Invited participants will
discuss: renewable resource assessments as a prerequisite to investment;
waste-to-energy systems, which can reduce waste disposal and electricity costs;
and renewable-based desalination, which will provide islands with fresh water
from the surrounding sea. Energy is a critical development challenge for
islands, and most electricity is generated from imported diesel fuel at a high
cost; thus, fuel import bills often exceed total export revenues. While many
islands have identified the transition to renewable energy as a policy
priority, realizing such a transition is often difficult due to the small size
of island markets, high installation costs, shortages of skills and limited
access to finance.

academic presentations (ten academic keynote presentations and 40 academic
contributed papers) and engagement with stakeholders through roundtable
discussions and public lectures. The forum seeks to connect researchers with
those who design and implement policy, as well as those who are affected by the
policies. The first Forum was hosted by the University of Exeter in 2011. The
following topics, inter alia, are expected to be addressed: impact of the
negotiation process on implementation of environmental agreements; the role of
institutions in shaping and monitoring agreements; the role of research and
development, adaptation and geoengineering in the success of climate change
mitigation strategies; the impact of policy instruments at the international
and domestic level on the success of agreements; the role of international and
domestic law in designing international environmental agreements; ecological,
technological and societal thresholds and tipping points; the roles of
uncertainty, risk and learning; and the economic impacts of agreements.

Symposium will aim to "bring ocean observations to users". It will
coordinate ocean-related tasks within the Group on Earth Observations (GEO);
discuss implementation of ocean observation systems; and raise awareness of the
societal benefits of ocean observations to the broader community, particularly
donors and policymakers. The symposium will be organized according to the Blue

Security; Ocean Forecasting and Services; Services for the Coastal Zone; Ocean
Climate and Carbon; and Developing Capacity and Social Awareness. It will
include a particular focus on observations in the Asia-Pacific region, linking
observations to societal benefits, such as for small island developing States
(SIDS) and coastal environments and the blue economy. GEO coordinates Blue

This
conference will facilitate South-led initiatives on climate change, connecting
government, business, civil society and social enterprise leaders from the
global South for "a different kind of debate on climate - a debate led by
the South, for the benefit of the whole world". The Climate South
Initiatives hopes to give voice to those not typically heard at climate change
conferences, to engage youth in the process, and to encourage collaboration on
solutions, rather than negotiation. Developing and emerging economies will
share their knowledge and expertise, focusing on areas for South-South
cooperation. The expected outcome is a declaration outlining the joint measures
that will support climate change leadership in the global South; the document
will also give input to the climate change negotiations planned for
November/December 2015 in Paris, France.
