Asian rice sellers kept their quotes unchanged from yesterday. Vietnam rice sellers are out today on account of a public holiday.
5% Broken Rice
Thailand 5% rice is indicated at around $380 - $390 per ton. India 5% rice is indicated at around $365 - $375 per ton, a $10 per ton discount to Pakistan 5% rice shown at around $375 - $385 per ton.
25% Broken Rice
Thailand 25% rice is shown at around $355 - $365 per ton. India 25% rice is indicated at around $340 - $350, about a $10 per ton premium on Pakistan 25% rice shown at around $330 - $340 per ton.
Parboiled Rice
Thailand parboiled rice is indicated at around $380 - $390 per ton. India parboiled rice is indicated at around $360 - $370 per ton, about a $25 per ton discount to Pakistan parboiled rice shown at around $385 - $395 per ton.
100% Broken Rice
Thailand broken rice, A1 Super, is indicated at around $320 - $330 per ton. India's 100% broken rice is shown at around $270 - $280 per ton,  about a $15 per ton discount to Pakistan broken sortexed rice shown at around $285 - $295 per ton.

Oryza Afternoon Recap - Chicago Rough Rice Futures Pressured Lower by Softer Grain Prices

Chicago rough rice futures for Jul delivery settled 13.5 cents per cwt (about $3 per ton) lower at $10.295 per cwt (about $227 per ton). The other grains finished the day lower; Soybeans closed about 1.2% lower at $9.7600 per bushel; wheat finished about 2% lower at $4.7400 per bushel, and corn finished the day about 0.3% lower at $3.6250 per bushel.U.S. stocks traded lower on Thursday on the last day of trade for the month as investors weighed some weakness in the dollar and higher Treasury yields.
The Nasdaq lagged behind the major indices, weighed by tech and biotechs. The Dow Jones industrial average traded about 100 points lower after the index briefly fell more than 140 points in morning trade. Earlier, stocks briefly halved losses as investors found some relief from news of progress towards a deal on Greece. An International Monetary Fund spokesman said the fund does not expect the country to exit the euro zone. Meanwhile, Greece's government signaled the biggest concessions so far as crunch talks with lenders on a cash-for-reforms package started in earnest, while trying to assure leftist supporters it had not abandoned its anti-austerity principles.
The Athens stock exchange closed up 3%, with most European equities ending mildly higher. Investors also attempted to interpret Wednesday's Fed statement which removed all calendar references on the timing of a rate hike. Officials have indicated a desire to raise rates at some point this year, with the market now anticipating an increase possibly in September. Weekly jobless claims came in at 262,000, a 15-year low. U.S. personal income was flat in March, and consumer spending up just 0.3% when adjusted for inflation. The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded down 111 points, or 0.63%, at 17,921.
The S&P 500 traded down 15 points, or 0.70%, at 2,092, with utilities leading all 10 sectors lower. The Nasdaq traded down 59 points, or 1.17%, at 4,964. Gold is trading about 2.5% lower, crude oil is seen trading about 1.4% higher, and the U.S. dollar is seen trading about 0.2% lower at about  1:00pm Chicago time.Wednesday, there were 3,037 contracts traded, up from 1,649 contracts traded on Tuesday. Open interest – the number of contracts outstanding – on Wednesday increased by 50 contracts to 11,378.

Nepal Rice Planting May Suffer After Recent Earthquake

Nepal typically starts the planting of its rice crop in May and June, but the 7.8 Mw earthquake means that rice planting may be impacted. Rice is grown in low-laying areas away from the most severe earthquake damage but could face delays as the nation recovers from the earthquake.Nepal typically produces about 3 million tons of rice a year and imports around an additional 350,000 tons, according to the USDA. FAO reports that the “UN and partners have launched a $415 million emergency appeal for Nepal to address the most urgent [food] needs.”Behind rice, wheat is the nation’s second largest staple grain and the wheat harvest - typically lasting from March to June – may be interrupted

 

Oryza Overnight Recap – Chicago Rough Rice Futures Trade Lower Ahead of Open; Strong Weekly Export Results May Support Prices

Chicago rough rice futures for Jul delivery are currently seen 2.5 cents per cwt (about $1 per ton) lower at $10.405 per cwt (about $229 per ton) ahead of floor trading in Chicago. The other grains are seen trading higher: soybeans are currently seen about 0.5% higher, wheat is listed about 0.8% higher and corn is currently noted 0.4% higher.U.S. stock index futures indicated a lower open on Thursday as markets digest major moves in the dollar and U.S. Treasurys, after the Federal Reserve reaffirmed its data-dependent stance. The U.S dollar weakened further on Thursday, after the euro spiked above $1.12 for the first time in two months on Wednesday. Meanwhile U.S. Treasury yields continue to trade higher, with the benchmark 10-year bond yielding 2.046% on Thursday.

The latest Chicago Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) survey is due at 9:45 a.m. ET, with a pick-up in the headline index expected following the very weak readings of the previous two months. European equities were mostly lower on Thursday, as investors reacted to earnings, as well as the Federal Reserve's latest interest rate decision. Gold is currently trading about 1.7% lower, crude oil is seen trading about 1% higher,  and the U.S. dollar is currently trading slightly lower at 9:30am Chicago time.

Oryza U.S. Rough Rice Recap - Prices Slide after IGB Delays Tender Results

The U.S. cash market was slightly weaker today after it was reported that the Iraqi Grain Board delayed announcing any winners in their latest tender until Monday, May 4th.Analysts note that the IGB was supposed to announce a winner today however in the past when they delayed announcing it did not bode well for U.S. origin offers.In the meantime, the USDA reported that cumulative net export sales for the week ending on April 23rd, totaled 112,800 tons, which was 72% higher than last week and considerably higher than the prior 4-week average.Increases were reported for the following destinations including: 22,000 tons to Libya, 20,500 tons to Haiti, 17,000 tons to South Korea, 14,900 tons to Colombia, and 12,100 tons to Mexico.
 U.S. rice exporters shipped 58,100 tons, which was 25% lower than last week and 18% lower than the prior 4-week average. The primary destinations included: 34,800 tons to Colombia, 10,000 tons to Haiti, 3,600 tons Mexico, 2,700 tons to Canada, and 1,700 tons to Jordan.

Philippines Ifugao Rice Terraces May Hold Surprising New Secret

The famed Ifugao Rice Terraces in the Philippines have been assumed to be 2,000 years old, pre-dating colonization by Spain. However, the director of the Ifugao Archeological Project (IAP) says that recent remains suggest the terraces are only 300 or 400 years old.  The IAP says the terraces may in fact be a response to colonialization, when rice eating people from the lowlands moved to the mountains to escape the Spanish and modified their rice production to adapt to the steep highlands.The IAP will present its official findings from years of research June 2015

Government of Pakistan Fixes 2015 Milled Rice Production Target at 7 Million Tons

Pakistan's Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) has set new production targets for this year's rice, sugarcane and maize crops, according to local sources.For rice, the FCA has fixed a target of 7 million tons, basis milled, (around 10.35 million tons, basis paddy) from an area of around 2.8 million hectares. It aims to produce 68 million tons of sugarcane and 4.6 million tons of maize this year.
Speaking at a conference after the FCA meeting, the Minister for National Food Security and Research told local sources that the volume of irrigated water would be adequate in all area except in some areas of Sindh. The Met Office also reported that water levels in all reservoirs and expressed confidence that rainfall would be normal in all parts of the country.The Minister noted that last year the availability of certified seeds had increased during the Kharif sowing season. A representative of the State Bank added that the allocation of institutional credit also increased substantially last year.
