Pakistan Rice Acreage and Production May Decline in 2015-16 Due to Low Prices, Says Farmers' Representative

Jun 01, 2015
The Secretary of a Pakistan rice farmers association has expressed concern that last year's low rice prices coupled with increasing power shortages may discourage farmers from cultivating paddy in 2015-16 (July - June), according to local sources. He told local sources that last year, the price of super basmati rice declined about 30% to around Rs.1,400 per 40 kilograms (around $343 per ton) from around Rs.2,000 per 40 kilograms (around $490 per ton) in 2013-14. imilarly, the price of Irri rice declined about 33% to around Rs.800 per kilograms (around $196 per ton) from around Rs.1,200 per 40 kilograms (around $294 per ton) in 2013-14.
The Secretary also noted that they are also expecting huge water shortages in the coming year due to increasing power shortages and expected hot summer. Tube wells will not run to their full capacity and rice needs three times more water than other crops, he adds.Saying the production costs are too high, he urged the government to consider reducing the prices of agricultural inputs like fertilizers, pesticides and petroleum products to help farmers. He also urged the government to frame strategies to boost exports. Some farmers noted that the government has so far not paid them the compensation package of Rs.5,000 per acre (around $123 per hectare) promised last year to cope up with the falling global rice prices. They urged the government to release the funds at the earliest.
USDA estimates Pakistan's MY 2014-15 (November - October) milled rice production at around 6.9 million tons (around 10.35 million tons, basis paddy). It estimated Pakistan's MY 2015-16 milled rice production to remain unchanged at 6.9 million tons.Last month, Pakistan's Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) is targeting to produce 7 million tons, basis milled, (around 10.35 million tons, basis paddy) from an area of around 2.8 million hectares in 2015.
