Prices Firm a Day after USDA Cuts U.S. and Global Ending Stocks

The U.S. cash market was firmer
today following yesterday’s USDA WASDE report that estimated that long grain
ending stocks decreased by 0.5 million cwt (about 22,689 tons) from last month
while global ending stocks were also lowered by 0.3 million tons to 90.2
million tons.
Analysts note that market
participants are eagerly waiting for the results of the latest Iraqi tender as
the results and the quantity purchased will likely give traders guidance as to
where prices are headed in the near term.

Chicago rough rice futures for May
delivery settled 10.5 cents were cwt (about $2 per ton) higher at $9.890 per
cwt (about $218 per ton). The other grains finished the day sharply higher;
Soybeans closed about 2.1% higher at $9.5575 per bushel; wheat finished about
1.9% higher at $4.6750 per bushel, and corn finished the day about 3.2% higher
at $3.20 per bushel.
U.S. stocks traded higher Wednesday,
helped by gains in financial stocks following JPMorgan's earnings beat and a
rally overseas after encouraging China trade data. European stocks rose more
than 2.5%, with the STOXX Europe 600 Bank index surging more than 6%.In the
first increase since June, China dollar-denominated exports rose 11.5% in March
from the same period last year, recovering from a 25.4% drop in February.
Imports fell a less-than-expected 7.6% in dollar-denominated terms and volumes
of most major commodities, notably copper and iron ore, rose strongly, Reuters
said. Asian stocks jumped, with the Nikkei 225 up 2.8%. The Hang Seng surged
nearly 3.2% and the Shanghai composite gained 1.4%.In economic news, February
business inventories declined 0.1%. Inventories in January were revised down to
show a 0.1% drop instead of the previously reported 0.1% gain. In midday trade,
the Dow Jones industrial average gained 148 points, or 0.84%, to 17,869. The
S&P 500 added 15 points, or 0.75%, to 2,077, with financials leading seven sectors
higher and telecommunications the greatest laggard. The Nasdaq composite added
55 points, or 1.14%, to 4,927. Gold is seen trading about 1% lower, crude oil
is seen trading about 0.5% lower, and the U.S. dollar is seen trading about
0.8% higher at about 1:00pm Chicago time.
Tuesday, there were 1,656 contracts
traded, up from 993 contracts traded on Monday. Open interest – the number of
contracts outstanding – on Tuesday decreased by 213 contracts to 12,977.

In its April 2016 World Agricultural Demand and Supply Estimates
(WASDE) report, the USDA lowered the forecast for U.S. all rice supplies to
around 11.99 million tons in 2015-16, from an estimated 12.56 million tons in
2014-15 and down from its previous estimates of around 12.02 million tons due
to expected lower long-grain rice imports. It forecasts 2015-16 long-grain rice
supplies at around 8.14 million tons, down from an estimated 9.03 million
tons last year and down from its previous estimates of around 8.16 million
tons.The USDA forecasts 2015-16 all rice imports at around 1.07 million tons,
down from around 1.09 million tons last year and down from its previous
estimates of around 1.09 million tons.
The USDA forecasts 2015-16 all rice ending stocks at around 1.97
million tons, up from an estimated 1.95 million tons last year and down from
its previous estimates of around 1.99 million tons. It forecasts 2015-16
long-grain ending stocks at around 1.02 tons, down from an estimated 1.27
million tons in 2014-15 and down from its previous estimates of around 1.04
million tons.The USDA lowered all rice average farm prices to around $271.17 -
$279.98 per ton from its last month's forecast of $273.537 - $291.00 per ton.
It lowered the U.S. long-grain rice average farm prices to around $238.10 -
$246.92 per ton from its last month's forecast of $242.5 - $255.73 per ton. It
lowered the U.S. combined medium- and short-grain rice average farm prices to
around $346.12 - $359.35 per ton from its last month's forecast of 352.74 -
$370.37 per ton.The USDA, however kept the projections for U.S. all rice
production and residual use unchanged from the previous month.

Italian paddy rice prices increased
or remained stable in the first week of April 2016 after a long period of
slowing down, according to local sources. The Oryza index of Italy's
paddy rice prices increased to around 382 euro (around $435) per ton as of April
5, 2016 from around 379 euro (around $423) per ton as of March 29, 2016.Below
are farm gate paddy quotes from the Milan grain exchange, as of April 5, 2016:
Sole on April 5 is out 310-330
euros (about $ 353-376) per ton, unchanged from a week prior.
Arborio-Volano prices are 740-765
euros (about $ 844-873) per ton, up from 695-720 euros (about $ 793-821) per

in India Continue to Increase on Tighter Supplies

Wholesale basmati rice prices in
the national capital increased today, due to high demand against restricted
supplies from producing regions, according to Business Standard citing the
Press Trust of India.On April 13, 2016, prices of Pusa 1121 increased to around
Rs.4,650 - 5,700 per quintal (around $701 - $860 per ton) from previous levels
of around Rs.4,500 - 5,500 per quintal (around $678 - $828 per ton).Prices of
common basmati increased to around Rs.5,900 - 6,000 per quintal (around $890 -
$905 per ton) from previous levels of around Rs.5,800 - 5,900 per quintal
(around $873 - $889 per ton).
