Agriculture Ministry: Food Production Increased
TEMPO.CO , Jakarta - Secretary General of the
Agriculture Ministry Hari Priyono claimed that the special program that was
introduced by the Ministry helped increase the national food production.According
to Hari, based on the forecast figures (Aram) II at the Central Statistics
Agency, the production of dried paddy in 2016 went up 4.97 percent or 79.1
million tons compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the corn production
increased by 18.1 percent or 23.2 million tons compared to 2015 which only
produced 19.6 million tons.
“I appreciate the work done by all parties in increasing the
production of strategic commodities [such as] paddy, corn, red onion, beef, and
buffalo meat in 2016,” he said on Thursday, January 26, 2017.
Hari said production of shallots reached 1.3 million tons last
year; increase by 5.74 percent compared to 2015. The production of red pepper
reached 2.1 million tons on 2016, equivalent to a 9.95 percent growth compared
to 2015.
Meanwhile, beef and buffalo meat production reached 0.56 million
tons. Its production increased by 3.7 percent compared to that in 2015 which
reached 0.54 million tons.

Indonesia to donate
10,000 MT of rice to Sri Lanka

Jan 25, Colombo: The Government of Indonesia will donate 10,000
metric tons (MT) of rice to Sri Lanka on a request made by President
Maithripala Sirisena and it will arrive in Sri Lanka soon, the Government
Information Department said.Meanwhile, the Ministry of Rural Economic Affairs
has taken steps to issue 90,958 MT of paddy of the Paddy Marketing Board at
district level to private paddy mill owners and Lanka Sathosa to be processed
into rice.It further considered that though Lanka Sathosa has already processed
the paddy and a kilogram of rice is being sold through Sathosa outlets at Rs.
76, private mill owners have still not issued them to the market.
The Cabinet has decided to appoint a Cabinet Subcommittee to
issue the rest of the stocks in a suitable method and to take action against
mill owners who have omitted the issuing of rice stocks to the market.
Cabinet of ministers also paid attention to the need of
importing rice from neighboring countries such as Indonesia, Vietnam unless the
price of rice is reduced
DA targets 3.7
million metric ton palay production for 2017

Agriculture (DA) is targeting a 3.7 million metric ton palay production for
2017 as it had placed 130,000 hectares for hybrid production. "We hope to
achieve the highest production in 2014," Villacorta said, adding that the
hectares devoted this year for hybrid is 20,000 more than in the year 2016. DA
Regional Director Andrew Villacorta said that the region may be expecting
cheaper rice with importation coming this year. But Villacorta assured that
farmers can keep up by improving yield.
The DA has
prepositioned P100 million worth of seeds in place in case of natural
calamities. Villacorta said that the DA is hoping to achieve food sufficiency
not just with rice but also with staple food like corn, sweet potato and
cassava among others. Machinery support for farmers for 2017 will be free with
no more counterpart funding requirement from the requesting farmer cooperative.
The DA has allocated some P500 million for the purchase of farm machineries for
the whole region

Rice prices in India, top global exporter of the grain, advanced this week on
robust domestic and international demand, while Thai prices fell in a quiet
market.Prices for India's 5 percent broken parboiled rice RI-INBKN5-P1 rose
this week to $354-$359 per tonne, from $352-$357 last week, as demand for paddy
or unmilled rice was robust from both local and overseas buyers.
"Since paddy prices have
risen, exporters were forced to raise milled rice prices," said an
exporter based at Kakinada in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.Government
agencies were also actively buying paddy for the public distribution system."Supplies
have improved, but demand is surpassing supplies," said a Mumbai based
exporter.The Indian government's move to scrap high value currency notes in
November to crack down on corruption also disrupted supply chains in November
and December and many local rice millers couldn't replenish their inventories.India
mainly exports non-basmati rice to African countries and premier basmati rice
to Middle East. Basmati is a long-grained, fragrant rice that is typically
grown in the South Asian subcontinent.
In Thailand, the world's
second-biggest rice exporter, prices of 5-percent broken rice RI-THBKN5-P1 fell
to $355-$360 a tonne, free-on-board (FOB) Bangkok, from $360-$365 last week."It's
quiet. Nothing significant is going on in the market," said a
Bangkok-based trader."Prices should remain stable for the next few
weeks," he said.The Thai Rice Exporters Association quoted the 5-percent
broken rice at $375 a tonne on Thursday, down from $380 a week ago.Vietnam's
5-percent broken rice RI-VNBKN5-P1 was quoted at $335-$340 a tonne, FOB Saigon,
on Wednesday, narrower from $335-$345 a tonne last week.
Vietnam, the world's
third-biggest rice exporter, will ship an estimated 325,000 tonnes of the grain
in January, down 32.3 percent from a year earlier, the agriculture ministry
said on Thursday.Revenue from the Vietnamese rice exports, mostly shipped to
China, Ghana and the Philippines, will reach an estimated $136 million this
month, or 35.1 percent lower than at the same time in 2016, the agriculture
ministry said in a monthly report.Vietnam's rice market is closed as the
country celebrates its Lunar New Year holidays, which begin on Thursday and run
through until next Wednesday.
On Tuesday, results from a tender
from Iraq's state grains buyer showed offers were made for 240,000 tonnes of
Indian rice, 110,000-120,000 tonnes of Thai rice, and 100,000 tonnes of

Commodity Groups Ask Trump to Keep Food Aid American-Grown
WASHINGTON, DC --
Earlier today, several commodity organizations providing the bulk of the
in-kind food aid contributions by the United States sent a letter to President
Trump asking him to maintain and strengthen the role that U.S. farmers play in
ensuring global food security.
The letter
highlights the "impressive, proven record," that the U.S. maintains
as the global leader in saving and improving lives through U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) food
assistance programs.
"While
President Trump has not specifically addressed food aid, we feel the rice
industry's approach is definitely in line with his overarching philosophy of
promoting U.S. products abroad," said USA Rice Vice President of Government
Affairs Ben Mosely. "U.S. taxpayers contribute significant dollars
to the global food aid effort and we have ample supplies of safe and affordable
food to give."
The mutually
beneficial approach of providing in-kind contributions through international
food assistance programs has allowed the U.S. to touch the lives of more than
three billion people in over 150 countries since 1966.
"USA Rice was
glad to be a part of this call to action to the new administration," said
Sarah Moran, USA Rice senior director for international trade and market
development. "U.S.-grown rice has historically been a big part of
the donations sent abroad through USDA and USAID's food assistance
programs. We know this is a priority for the industry and have been
working long and hard to improve rice's use in the various programs as a
healthy and nutritious alternative to simply handing over cash."
No fake rice
in Malaysia, says Health Ministry

The Health Ministry has clarified that several brands of rice, which are said
to be fake and made from plastic, had not been imported into the country. The
brands are Kokeshi Rice, Kohinoor Basmati Rice dan NICR. In a statement today,
Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the ministry had
been monitoring the types of rice available in the local market and can confirm
that the fake rice are not sold in the country. "As stated in a press
release by the ministry on May 21 in 2015, rice imported into the country are
usually from Vietnam, Thailand and Pakistan as confirmed by Bernas (Padi Beras
Nasional Bhd). "Bernas also added that all the rice are imported in bulk
and packaged locally in a variety of sizes," he said.
With the
clarification, he said the public need not worry about fake rice as the
monitoring and enforcement of food safety are constantly carried out to ensure
that food available in the market is safe. Should consumers have doubt on the
safety of a particular food item in the market, Dr Noor Hisham said they can
make a complaint to the ministry through the state Health Department or the
nearest district Health Office. Complaints can also be made at ministry's
website, http://moh.spab.gov.my and the Facebook page of the ministry's Food
Safety and Quality Division at www.facebook.com/bkkmhq. In June last year, the
Health Ministry had also clarified allegations on fake rice. A producing factory
in Kedah was alleged to produces fake rice, which was untrue and baseless. 1085

Turmeric rules at this plant-based food truck

Like many plant-based operations,
the Curcuma food truck uses the soft evangelism of its "About"
section to make a case for eliminating meat and dairy, describing chef and
owner Rachel Musquiz's "personal journey" switching over to ayurvedic
and (assumably) vegan eating. The section describes turmeric, the rhizome for
which the trailer is named, as a gateway herb – and it is as good an entry as
any to what Curcuma does, showing up in voguish golden "mylk" lattes
and ice cream. Even when not using its namesake, the trailer is very much on
trend, offering activated charcoal black lemonade ($6 for a large), coconut
butter coffee ($4), and a shockingly drinkable super matcha latte ($6) filled
with all sorts of algae and cyanobacteria.
On the food side, the sweet potato
"toast" ($8 for a three-slice sampler) is actually built on a
longways slice of the tuber, and that can take some getting used to. In order
to provide a rigid enough base, the sweet potatoes aren't exposed to too much
heat, creating a slightly off-putting texture. It's a testament to Musquiz's palate
that I largely forgot about that crunch midway through. Of the three varieties,
the spicy avocado mash was the most effective, sticking to the guacamole
foundation of citrus, pepper, and salt. But the milky cashew ricotta and the
autumnally spiced cinnamon and coconut butter each have their pleasures, both
relying on (light) salt and crunch – from pepitas and crushed pecans,
respectively. Those are suitable for sharing along with an order of the filling
rose tahini cacao truffles ($2.75) that feel like an indulgence even if they
probably aren't.
Still, the intersection between
Curcuma's ayurvedic principles and Musquiz's craft peaks with the kitchari bowl
($10). Kitchari is most commonly a stewlike mixture of basmati rice and mung
dal, made with ghee, seasonal vegetables, and various seasonings, contemporarily
popular for mono-diet cleanses. Curcuma's version is drier than most, keeping
the mung beans but replacing the rice with quinoa, creating something akin to
the Buddha bowls that so effectively preoccupy bloggers. Cynicism aside, this
bowl earns its hype by avoiding extraneous ingredients and garnishes.
Everything has a purpose, from the chomp of the chickpeas to the snap of the
massaged (ugh) spinach, and the dabs of flavor – a ginger chutney, pickled
onions, sesame seeds on the avocado – make each bite distinct, avoiding the
monotony of many grain bowls. Curcuma's kitchari is almost good enough to carry
the entire menu, but it's probably for the best that they recently added a
spirulina pesto zucchini-noodle bowl ($8) with cumin and radish to the list,
and that the "coming soon" list promises even more variety. I'm eager
to try the miso soup.

GAZIPUR, Jan 26: Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury has urged the
scientists of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) to develop more rice
varieties which can tolerate salinity, drought and flood.
She made the call while addressing an inaugural session of Annual
Research Review Workshop 2015-16 of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute in
Gazipur on Thursday. Agriculture
Secretary Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah chaired the inaugural session while
Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation Mohammed
Nasiruzzaman, Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council Dr
Mohammad Jalal Uddin and Director General of Department of Agricultural
Extension Mohammed Monjurul Hannan attended the programme as special guests.
BRRI Director General Dr Bhagya Rani Banik delivered welcome
address while BRRI Director (Administration and Common Service) Dr Mohammed
Shahjahan Kabir, BRRI Director (Research) Dr Mohammed Ansar Ali also spoke on the occasion.Experts and
officials from different government and non-governmental organizations
including BRRI, BARI, BARC, DAE and IRRI as well as farmers' representatives
were present at the workshop.
The technical sessions would continue for the next five days. The
contents of the workshop would include the details of achievements and advances
in rice research and extension programmes completed over the last year. The
workshop would also include research results of the 19 research divisions and
nine regional stations of the institute carried out in 2015-16.

DA to donate brown rice to
various charities

The #BROWN4good Challenge, a
social-media campaign of the Department of Agriculture (DA), is donating more
than a million pesos worth of brown rice to chosen charities nationwide.
To start the donations at the
National Capital Region (NCR), celebrities Kylie Padilla and Mikael Daez
distributed packs of brown rice to over 200 families in Payatas, Quezon City,
on January 19. They also helped serve brown-rice arroz caldo to children from
the said community in coordination with the local government of Payatas,
Komunidad Kay Kristo (KKK-Payatas) and the ladies of Bayan Muna-Payatas.
The rest of the brown-rice
donations for NCR will be given by ABS-CBN Foundation to over 400 families from
communities along the Pasig River.
Meanwhile, regional donations
have already started in the cities of Cebu, Davao and Iloilo, among others.
Beneficiaries include elders, indigenous peoples, street children and drug
rehabilitees at charitable institutions supported by the Department of Social
Welfare and Development (DSWD).Combining hash-tagging, selfie/food
photography and the challenge craze, the #BROWN4good Challenge enjoined
the public to do “four goodness” simply by eating brown rice. Every photo of a
brown-rice meal posted in social media from August 28 to December 5, 2016, with
a hashtag was equated to a cup of brown rice for the charities.
The DA said the campaign was a
way to inform the public of the four goodness of brown rice: personal goodness
considering its health benefits; goodness to the farmers; goodness for the
country, as brown rice has 10 percent higher milling recovery; and for others,
such as the beneficiaries of the chosen charities who will receive brown rice
for their consumption.
“We’re happy that many were
encouraged to eat brown rice because of the challenge. They had different
motivations. But whatever that is, we are glad they committed to eat brown rice
regularly, with some even committing for life,” said Hazel V. Antonio, campaign
director of the Be Riceponsible Campaign.The Philippine Rice Research Institute
(PhilRice) said brown rice is unpopular among low- and middle-income classes,
despite its health benefits, because of its high price. By commissioning
farmers’ cooperatives to be suppliers of good-quality brown rice and linking
them to retailers and food establishments, PhilRice was able to make it available
in major cities at P37 to P45 per kilogram.
“While it was made around 40
percent cheaper than in malls, farmers were still able to get income of as much
as six times higher because of the project. Thus, consumers were able to afford
it while also increasing the income of farmers,” Antonio said.
“The #BROWN4good Challenge proved
that Filipinos are just deterred by the high price of brown rice. Given more
affordable and accessible supply, more would be willing to embrace it for good.
Thus, the challenge that DA would continue to address,”
she added.
The #BROWN4good Challenge is part
of the bigger campaign, dubbed as Be Riceponsible, a social mobilization
initiative created to spread awareness on the value of every rice grain and to
encourage the consumption of healthier rice options, such as brown or
unpolished white rice
