The
cereal was found in warehouses in Mombasa and there are fears some of it is
already in the market. Even before the storm surrounding alleged contaminated
sugar subsides, detectives have impounded a staggering one million bags of
toxic rice in Mombasa County. And that is not all. The investigators have also
confiscated more than 400 containers of cooking oil which, they say, do not
meet required standards. ALSO READ: MP wants colleagues probed on sugar brief A
team of detectives working on a report compiled by Kenya Association of
Manufacturers (KAM) and Government agencies, including National Intelligence
Service (NIS), seized the goods last month. According to the Directorate of
Criminal Investigations (DCI), the rice, originally from Pakistan, had been
condemned as unfit for human consumption but somehow found its way into Kenya.
The consignment was past the expiry date by three years. In addition, the Kenya
Bureau of Standards (Kebs) refused to clear more than 400 containers
of 20kg jerricans of cooking oil from Malaysia. Yesterday, Director of
Criminal Investigations George Kinoti said rogue importers were printing new
bags that were transported to the high seas and used to repackage the
contaminated rice. Avoid becoming a victim of Fake News. Subscribe to the

impounded about one million bags of rice stored in some warehouses in Mombasa.
We believe some of the toxic rice may have been sneaked into the market,” Mr
Kinoti said. The DCI said the cartel, working with customs officials,
facilitated entry of the contraband rice. “They print new bags with fresh
expiry dates then repackage the rice ready for entry through the port. Some of
the rice had been condemned about three years ago as unfit for human
consumption,” he added. The Palm Oil Refiners Association of Malaysia (Poram)
has already petitioned its government to intervene and have the oil shipped
back to Malaysia. ALSO READ: Punish MPs for creating circus over contraband
sugar probe In a letter dated July 10, 2018, Poram Chief Executive Officer Teoh
Beng Chuan said the oil was impounded as it did not have 20mg/kg of vitamin A
as required. “We have further been informed that the exporters’ request to take
ownership of the cargo and re-ship it to another destination has also been
denied. Meanwhile, the containers continue to remain in the port yard incurring
additional storage charges beyond the 14 days free period allowed,” Mr Chuan
said. The letter to Malaysia’s Deputy Secretary General (Trade), Ministry of
International Trade and Industry adds: “We therefore seek your kind assistance to
have Kenyan authorities to resolve this impasse urgently as it affects the
image of Malaysian palm oil industry in addition to the cost involved if its
further delayed." Collected intelligence This came as reports indicated
KAM and NIS had collected intelligence that could lead to major changes
at Kebs, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).
The report, already shared with President Uhuru Kenyatta, implicates the
agencies in corruption, according to those who have seen it. It details
incidents where port officials allowed in sub-standard goods, under-valued the
goods and failed to even inspect most containers, leading to major losses.
How MPs were swayed to shoot down report
Sources say officials from the agencies are likely to be charged in court this
week after the Director of Public Prosecutions approved their prosecution.
Besides the Mombasa port, the team is expanding its probe to other major entry
points. Three months ago, rice and expired spaghetti valued at Sh250 million
was destroyed after it was declared unfit for human consumption. Kebs said the
food, contained in 163 containers, underwent thorough screening before being
declared sub-standard. Kebs and KRA have imposed new rules that require all
goods destined for Kenya be verified at source. The inspecting agency will also
determine the duty to be paid by the manufacturer. This was part of the
Government’s efforts to tighten the noose on tax evaders who under-declare the
true cost of goods. Inspection agency fees are pegged on a percentage of the
total value of goods and the same is sent to Kenya via the Internet to enable
KRA to charge the correct duty. Kinoti said their investigation dated back to
January and showed that Kenya had lost taxes amounting to Sh100 billion through
tax evasion and importation of contraband goods. On Friday, eight Government
officials working at the port were charged at the Chief Magistrate’s Court in
Mombasa over the release of 10,000 bags of sub-standard brown sugar. ALSO READ:
Court orders impounded sugar be released They included the inspection manager
and inspection officer at Kebs and Kilindini Port respectively. And last
Monday, both KRA and DCI restated their commitment to deepening collaboration
in combating tax evasion and corruption. “The collaboration focuses on varied
aspects including the management of customs clearance operations and the
tackling of illicit trade, and both importation and local manufacturer level.
Concealment charges “In this regard, the DCI and KRA wish to announce the
arraignment in court of three Kenya Ports Authority officials and one KRA
official on charges of concealment and improper declaration of goods imported
through the Port of Mombasa, contrary to Section 202(a) of the East African Community
Act 2004,” said the statement. The suspects were charged with concealing
imported goods worth over Sh6 million. According to the charge sheet, the
accused on diverse dates between July 3 and August 4, 2018 concealed goods at a
KPA shed at the Embakasi Inland Depot in Nairobi, intending to remove them
without following prescribed processes. A team of detectives from the DCI
headquarters arrived in Mombasa last week to extend the probe after visiting
the KRA headquarters and the Inland Container Depot. In Mombasa, they have
interrogated a number of staff and studied how cargo arrives, is inspected and
released.

August 20, 2018
A 100-feet breach in the
embankment of Rice Canal at Esso Thebo village near Mehar town submerged 300
hundred acres of farmland, five fish farms and 25 thatched cottages of several
villages on Sunday.
Due to constant erosion,
the weak section of the dyke could not withstand strong currents, and
consequently breached on Sunday morning, said the villagers who attributed the
cause to substandard repair and renovation work, besides lack of inspection and
supervision by the Irrigation department.
Meanwhile, farmers of
the villages rushed to the site and informed the Irrigation authorities who
failed to respond immediately, and so they had to prevent the further loss on a
self-help basis.
However, farmers
suffered a loss of millions of rupees, and demanded help from the district
administration to recover.
They informed that a
desilting and repair programme to strengthen the Rice Canal was launched by the
Irrigation department in the previous tenure of Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP)
provincial government in Sindh; however, the programme was ineffective and the
funds were embezzled by the Irrigation officials.
Later, they appealed to
National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (Rtd) Javed Iqbal, Chief
Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar, Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran
Khan and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah to take notice of the
malpractices and embezzlement of funds which were granted to repair the
embankments and de-siltation of the Rice Canal, and take action accordingly to
deliver justice to the affected farmers and villagers.

Chinese scientists discover gene helping rice adapt to
cold climate
2018-08-19
13:27:42XinhuaEditor : Li Yan
Chinese
scientists have found a gene which plays an important role in helping rice,
originating in warm southern China, expand to the relatively cold northern
regions.Rices grown in Asia include two subspecies: indica rice and japonica
rice. The heat-resistant indica rice is mainly planted in southern China, as
well as the tropical and subtropical areas in South Asia and Southeast Asia,
while the japonica rice, after nearly 10,000 years of domestication and
selection, can tolerate cold weather and has been expanded to northern China
and the temperate zones in Northeast Asia.
After
analyzing 202 rice samples from various growing regions around the world
collected by the Department of Agriculture of the United States, Chinese
researchers at the Institute of Genetics and Development Biology of the Chinese
Academy of Sciences identified a gene, bZIP73, associated with cold tolerance.
The
researchers believe the gene has facilitated the adaptation of rice to low
temperatures.
Rice
is one of the most important cereal crops feeding more than half of the world's
population. Cold stress is a major factor limiting production and geographic
distribution of rice, said Chu Chengcai, a lead scientist in the research.
The
discovery may help breed new rice varieties which can grow in high latitude and
high altitude regions, Chu said.
The
research was published in the latest issue of the journal Nature
Communications.

'Worrisome'
levels of lead, arsenic found in popular baby foods

Consumer Reports found 15 baby and toddler foods, including
these five, to contain levels of heavy metals such as arsenic that pose a
potential health risk. The organization says to not feed children more than one
serving of these a day.(Consumer Reports)
(Meredith) — Consumer advocacy
group Consumer Reports is warning parents to limit some types of baby food
after finding "worrisome" levels of toxic chemicals, such as arsenic
and lead, in them.
Consumer Reports tested 50 baby and toddler
food products for cadmium, lead, mercury and arsenic. The foods
were bought from a variety of grocery stores across the United States.
What foods are causing concern
Of the 50 foods tested, 34
contained levels of toxic chemicals that food safety experts with Consumer
Reports say are worrisome. However, of those 34, 15 products were marked as the
worst, actually putting babies who eat one serving of them a day at risk of
health problems.
The 15 products Consumer Reports
says to limit to one serving or less per day (or else they could pose a
potential health risk) are: Gerber Chicken & Rice Gerber Turkey & Rice
Gerber Lil' Meals White Turkey Stew with Rice & Vegetables Gerber Carrot,
Pear & Blackberry Gerber Carrots Peas & Corn with Lil' Bits Earth's
Best Organic Chicken & Brown Rice Earth's Best Turkey, Red Beans &
Brown Rice Earth's Best Organic Sweet Potatoes, 1st Stage Earth's Best Organic

Just Sweet Potato Organic Baby Food Beech-Nut Classics Sweet Potatoes Happy
Baby Organics Superfood Puffs, Apple & Broccoli Happy Baby Organics
Superfood Puffs, Purple Carrot & BlueberryFood products containing rice
and/or sweet potatoes were particularly likely to contain high levels of heavy
metals.
Organic foods are not safer
Consumer Reports found that organic
baby foods were just as likely to contain these toxic chemicals as conventional
products.
In a Consumer Reports survey, 39
percent of parents who bought packaged baby foods bought organic ones, saying
their primary reason for buying organic was to avoid heavy metals.
The risk of potential health
problems
While the findings are worrisome,
Chief Scientific Officer at Consumer Reports James Dickerson says parents who
have been feeding their children these foods shouldn't panic. Eating these
foods does not ensure a baby will develop health problems, but they do
potentially increase the risk.
Exposure to even small amounts of
toxic heavy metals at a young age is linked to several health problems,
including lower IQ, behavioral problems, autism and attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Exposure to these heavy metals
can also harm adults, but babies and toddlers are more vulnerable given their
smaller size and developing brains.
The issue specifically concerns
children in the United States because they eat large amounts of packaged foods.
Annual sales of pre-packaged baby food exceed $53 billion, according to
Consumer Reports.
The good news
The Consumer Reports
investigation did find that 16 of the 50 tested products had less concerning
levels of the toxic heavy metals. This suggests that low, non-worrisome levels
are achievable, and all baby food manufacturers should be able to get there
with the right guidelines and regulations.
What the FDA is doing
According to the Consumer Reports
investigation, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed limiting
inorganic arsenic in infant rice cereal to 100 parts per billion in 2016. In
2013, the FDA also proposed limiting inorganic arsenic in apple juice to 10
parts per billion, which is the federal standard for drinking water.
Unfortunately, neither proposed
limit was ever finalized. However, the FDA said the limits should be in place
by the end of 2018.
The FDA told Consumer Reports:
“The agency has made this a priority and is working to reduce the health risks
these elements present, especially to those most vulnerable: children.”
How heavy metals get into food
How do these toxic chemicals get
into food in the first place? Well, they are all part of the Earth's crust, so
they are naturally found in the environment. However, most of the heavy metals
in food come from soil or water that has been tainted through farming and
manufacturing practices, like pesticide use, mining, smelting and pollution.
Steps to take as a parent
Consumer Reports offers 11 tips
for parents on how to keep your child safe from harmful heavy metals. The list
includes: Limit the amount of infant rice cereal your child eats Choose the
right rice (White basmati rice from California, India, and Pakistan, and sushi
rice from the U.S. had the lowest levels of heavy metals) Rethink rice prep
(cook rice in large amounts of water and drain well) Limit packaged snacks Seek
out whole foods low in heavy metals (such as apples, unsweetened applesauce,
avocados, bananas, barley with diced vegetables, beans, cheese, grapes,
hard-boiled eggs, peaches, strawberries and yogurt) Be wary of fruit juice Go
easy on the chocolate Pick the right fish (Bigeye tuna, king mackerel, orange
roughy, shark, and swordfish are particularly high in mercury) Pass on protein
powders Have your home water supply tested Eat a broad array of healthful whole
foodsLearn

Rice in concerns
Localised research in hybrid rice seed
technology is key to boost yield and export. Is the government supporting it?
Pakistan is facing a widening trade deficit with
imports increasing fast over the years and exports not being able to match
these. The exporters have failed to capture more international markets and
increase their export volumes. The fact that they are into exports of basic
items like cotton and yarn and not the value-added stuff explains well why
their export earnings are limited. Besides, the exporters claim the high input
costs and lack of level playing field put them at a disadvantage viz a viz
their competitors in the region.
However, an encouraging news in this somewhat
depressive environment for exporters is that the rice exports from Pakistan
exceeded $2 billion mark during the year 2017-2018. According to the data
shared by the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP), the country
exported 4.02 million tonnes rice during the last fiscal year. This figure is
16.6 per cent higher than that of the preceding year’s when the country exported
3.44 million tonnes.
This
year the country was also able to export 200,000 tonnes rice to Indonesia which
helped it achieve the current rice export figure. Besides, Kenya emerged as the
largest buyer of non-basmati rice from Pakistan as it procured 439,000 tonnes
of rice worth $ 171 million during the year. On the other hand, the export of
rice to China was far less than the potential that exists. The Pakistani
authorities and rice exporters are looking into this and devising plans to
enhance market access in China.
Amid
this achievement, there is a realisation among different stakeholders that
Pakistan needs to enhance its rice production and the best way to do this is to
improve its per acre yield. Higher yield means higher farmer’s income and lower
cost. Besides, in order to increase exports the country must have surplus
stocks. The situation at the moment is that Pakistan’s annual rice production
is around 7 million tonnes and this is one of the reasons why the country’s
rice exports have hovered around 4 million tonnes for the last many years. This
is in stark contrast to the situation in like Thailand and Vietnam that avail
multiple rice crops in a year and have annual rice production around 100
million tonnes.
So, the
question here is how can Pakistan increase its rice production despite water
shortage and extreme weathers due to climate change? Muhammad Ihsan, an
agricultural engineer from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF), says
it is high time the country goes for agricultural research and develop high
yield hybrid seeds to boost rice production even in adverse conditions. “There
are rice growers who are importing hybrid rice seeds on their own but this
shall be done in a systematic way under the supervision of the government,” he
suggests.
Another
matter of concern is that exports from Pakistan are mainly of non-basmati rice
whereas the exports of basmati rice have plummeted over the years. A couple of
years ago, the country was exporting one million tonne basmati rice but now
this figure has come down to 0.5 million tonne. There is no major breakthrough
yet in the field of hybrid basmati rice technology and due to this per acre
yield of this variety is quite low.
A
couple of years ago, the country was exporting one million tonne basmati rice
but now it has come down to 0.5 million tonne. There is no major breakthrough
yet in the field of hybrid basmati rice technology.
Shahzad
Ali Malik, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Guard Agricultural Research and
Services and former chairman of REAP, shares it with TNS that his company is doing research in hybrid
rice seed in collaboration with the Yuan Longping High-Tech Agriculture Company
Ltd, China and has developed seeds for the local and international markets.
He says
their research in hybrid non-basmati rice technology has resulted in doubling
the yield of IRRI Rice and income of farmers. “When the yield per acre is
doubled the input cost is halved and the product becomes competitive in the
export market.”
Malik
adds that apart from increasing yield their research is focusing on heat,
drought and salinity resistant rice varieties as this will help cultivate rice
on more and more lands. They are also exporting hybrid seed which is being
produced in harsh weather conditions of Sindh’s coastal areas and is suitable
even for plantation in the changing climate of China and other countries, he
adds.
He
shares they are currently carrying out research on basmati rice and will soon
come out with high yield hybrid seed for this variety. However, he explains
they have taken their own initiative and not everybody can do this. Therefore,
he suggests, the government must provide its support and offer incentives to
the groups that go for agricultural research.
The
government of Pakistan must follow the example of India which has banned import
of hybrid seed and focus on local production. Pakistan can take a less drastic
measure and impose import duty on hybrid rice seed and incentives research at
local level.

Rice importations fail to temper rising cost of rice
Published August 18, 2018, 10:00 PM
By Bernie Cahiles-Magkilat
The buying price of locally
produced palay have recently reached an unprecedented level of P29 per kilo —
with rice imports failing to serve its purpose, which is to temper the cost of
commercial rice being sold in the local market.
On Friday, the Department of
Agriculture (DA) had a closed-door meeting with rice stakeholders as the price
of commercial rice rose by P1 to P2 per kilo, which was triggered by the
all-time high increase in the price of palay.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel
Piñol said while the increase in the buying price of palay is good for farmers,
it will have an adverse effect for consumers.
He said stakeholders blamed the
increase to the delay in the arrival of imported rice, with some retailers
already completely running out of affordable, subsidized rice from the National
Food Authority (NFA).
Stakeholders, however, denied
that there is hoarding of rice supply.
During the fourth week of July,
farmgate price of palay picks up after previous week’s decline, according to
Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
To be specific, the average
farmgate price of palay went up by 1.02 percent to P21.81 per kilogram (kg)
from previous week’s level of P21.59 per kg. This was also higher by 11.79
percent from the level a year ago at P19.51 per kg.
Meanwhile, upward adjustments are
still noted for both wholesale and retail prices of well milled rice.
At the wholesale trade, the
average price of well milled rice at P42.60 per kg exhibited a price increase
of nearly 1 percent from previous week’s level. Relative to the same period in
the previous year, it was also priced higher by 8.81 percent.
The average retail price of well
milled rice at P45.32 per kg posted an uptick of 0.71 percent from the same
level a week ago. Similarly, it rose by 8.03 percent from P41.95 per kg in the
previous year.
As for regular milled rice, the
average wholesale price at P39.13 per kg during the week moved upward by 0.69
percent. Relative to the same period in the previous year, this week’s price
level accelerated by 10.72 percent.
The average retail price of
regular milled rice, on the other hand, picked up to 41.59 per kg, 0.78 percent
higher compared to the previous week’s level. It likewise climbed by 9.71
percent from the level a year ago at P37.91 per kg.
Right now, Philippine’s daily
rice requirement is estimated at 32,750 metric tons.
Villar seeks P10-B annual budget for rice production
Updated August 19, 2018, 8:10 AM
By Mario B Casayuran
The Senate Agriculture and Food
Committee on Saturday pressed the national government to allot P10 billion a
year for its rice competitive agricultural enhancement program that will
finance the importation of mechanized farm implements and boost the country’s
anemic rice production.
If these are done, it would
eventually spell the end to the annual rice importation that costs billions of
pesos and distribution of overpriced rice that has hurt the country’s rice
consumers.
Sen. Cynthia A. Villar, committee
chairperson, stressed these during a DZRH radio interview with former Senate
President Aquilino Q. Pimentel Jr.
She said the use of mechanized
farm implements and use of certified seeds developed by PhilRice, among others,
would make the price of rice produced by Vietnam and the Philippines almost
even. Thus, rice importation and smuggling will no longer be profitable, Villar
added.
This is a natural solution to the
perennial rice supply problem as it would make the farmer financially capable,
she explained.
Villar said the imported mechanized
implements would be distributed to farmers’ associations and cooperatives, and
not individually.
She noted that the reason Vietnam
produces palay that costs 100 percent lower than the Philippine production cost
is due to Vietnamese farmers’use of mechanized farm implements.
Using the certified seeds would
also increase production from the present two to four metric tons of rice to
six metric tons per hectare, she explained.
Villar also stressed the need to
use natural fertilizers after the United Nations pointed out that 30 percent of
the country’s agricultural lands are degraded through the use of chemical
fertilizers. She likewise emphasized the need to establish farm schools in the
country, citing the case of France, a developed country, that has its own farm
schools.
While the Philippines is supposed
to be a rice-producing country, Villar said she could not understand why the
country still imports close to one million metric tons of rice this year.
She also noted that the
Philippines was short of seven percent of rice supply that prompted the
importation of close to 500,000 metric tons to cover production shortfalls.
It is ironic, Pimentel said, that
foreigners have studied agriculture at Philippine agricultural schools but the
Philippines has to import rice.
Villar also revealed that the state-owned National Food Authority (NFA), which is mandated to maintain buffer stocks of rice, has failed the Filipino people of their expectations of available rice the whole year round.
Villar also revealed that the state-owned National Food Authority (NFA), which is mandated to maintain buffer stocks of rice, has failed the Filipino people of their expectations of available rice the whole year round.
This failure makes rice traders
or hoarders richer, she pointed out.
The high price of rice is also
another reason the country’s inflation rate has risen, it was explained.
In the same radio interview,
Pimentel sought the citizenry’s support to the anti-corruption campaign of
President Duterte by identifying rice hoarders and furnishing evidence if they
have.
The President revealed a month
ago that he knew of the activities of rice hoarders.
Pimentel, a PDP-Laban partymate
of President Duterte and father of former Senate President Aquilino Pimentel
III, said the Senate has done its part by conducting public hearings on the
rice issue.
He said the people should not
blame Congress for conducting series of public hearings but should now point
the blame to the Executive branch for its failure to increase rice production
and put behind bars rice smugglers and hoarders.
Likewise, Villar asked why the
Department of Justice (DOJ), despite her pleadings during annual budget
hearings, has not filed the non-bailable charge of economic sabotage against a
rice smuggler or rice cartel member who is caught with P10 million or more
worth of smuggled rice.
Despite
higher credit flow, agri-sector encounters big challenges
Published: August 20, 2018
KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has set a
credit disbursement target of Rs1.25 trillion for the agricultural sector,
which is around 20% higher than the country’s public sector development budget
of Rs1.03 trillion for fiscal year 2018-19.
This is not for the first time that the
central bank has set an ambitious credit flow target for the agronomy. The
target was fixed at Rs500 billion for fiscal year 2015, Rs600 billion for FY16,
Rs700 billion for FY17 and Rs1 trillion for FY18.
However, the massive increase in
disbursement targets could not help achieve broader objectives in the
agricultural sector whose share stands at one-fifth in the $313 billion worth
of gross domestic product (GDP) – the size of national economy in FY18.
Farm output per hectare has dropped to one
of the lowest in the world instead of going up, agricultural research
institutes have broadly failed to introduce new seed varieties, mainly for
export commodities like rice and orange, and living standard of most of the
farmers remains low.
Apart from these, water scarcity and climate
change have emerged as latest challenges for the agricultural sector.
According to a recent report drafted by the
Pakistan Business Council, the low crop yield has not got any better for a long
time and now it has sunk to one of the lowest in the world.
Pakistan produces 3.1 tons of wheat per
hectare, which is just 38% of the 8.1 tons produced in France – the world’s
best productivity.
Similarly, Pakistan produces 2.5 tons of
cotton per hectare, which is 52% of the 4.8 tons produced in China.
Sugarcane yield stands at 63.4 tons per
hectare, which is 51% of the 125.1 tons Egypt produces while maize productivity
is estimated at 4.6 tons per hectare, 41% of the 11.1 tons France is producing.
In rice crop, Pakistan produces 2.7 tons
from every hectare, which is merely 29% of the 9.2 tons produced in the US.
Lacking capacity
On the other hand, most of the agricultural
institutes are sitting idle and lack the capacity to come up with solutions to
the pressing challenges.
A rice miller complained that research
institutes were getting hefty annual budgets, but were incapable of addressing
the problems emerging from time to time like climate change.
The time for sowing different crops in
Pakistan is changing gradually every year because of the impact of climate
change, but relevant research institutes do not give any meaningful guidelines
how to cope with the situation.
Besides, the living standard of farmers has
continued to remain poor. Most of the time they fail to get justified prices
for their produce like sugarcane, cotton and rice.
This comes despite the announcement of
minimum support prices for some major crops by the government. And if they
manage to sell their harvest, the buyers, mostly millers, do not pay the price
on time.
Agriculturists have described higher credit
disbursement a good job on the part of the central bank, but the credit flow
does not appear enough to fight against odds and the challenges faced by the
sector.
Therefore, the government and private sector
need to join hands for building the capacity of research institutes, help
farmers increase crop productivity and form a hassle-free payment system for
the growers.
Sindh Abadgar Board Vice President Syed
Mehmood Nawaz Shah praised the central bank for ensuring a smooth credit flow,
but said the allocated funds were still insignificant in relation to farmers’
demand.
“These funds do not reach all the needy
farmers, especially small growers,” he said.
Shah revealed that though Sindh’s share in
the total agricultural produce stood at 23%, the province got less than 5% of
the credit disbursement.
“The Sindh government has to wake up…play an
active role in getting due share in total credit disbursement for the
province’s farmers,” he emphasised.
Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan
(REAP) Senior Vice Chairman Rafique Suleman suggested that the new government
should explore new markets for rice exports, introduce new paddy seeds to
increase production, reduce the cost of manufacturing for exports, provide
suitable land for establishing industries and do necessary research and
development work.

Chinese scientists discover gene helping rice

Chinese scientists have found a
gene which plays an important role in helping rice, originating in warm
southern China, expand to the relatively cold northern regions.
Rices grown in Asia include two
subspecies: indica rice and japonica rice. The heat-resistant indica rice is
mainly planted in southern China, as well as the tropical and subtropical areas
in South Asia and Southeast Asia, while the japonica rice, after nearly 10,000
years of domestication and selection, can tolerate cold weather and has been
expanded to northern China and the temperate zones in Northeast Asia.
After analyzing 202 rice samples
from various growing regions around the world collected by the Department of
Agriculture of the United States, Chinese researchers at the Institute of
Genetics and Development Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences identified
a gene, bZIP73, associated with cold tolerance.
The researchers believe the gene
has facilitated the adaptation of rice to low temperatures.
Rice is one of the most important
cereal crops feeding more than half of the world's population. Cold stress is a
major factor limiting production and geographic distribution of rice, said Chu
Chengcai, a lead scientist in the research.
The discovery may help breed new
rice varieties which can grow in high latitude and high altitude regions, Chu
said.
The research was published in the
latest issue of the journal Nature Communications.

Scanty rain forces farmers to
irrigate fields
12:00 AM, August 20, 2018 / LAST MODIFIED: 12:00 AM,
August 20, 2018
Many
farmers have to depend on water pumps to irrigate fields before transplanting
seedlings. Photo: Star/file
Farmers, particularly up north,
have taken up irrigation to transplant aman seedlings and water the fields that
have already been cultivated amid scanty rainfall this monsoon.
The ongoing dry weather has raised
fears that they would be unable to take care of their crop properly, which
would then affect the yields of aman rice. Aman accounts for 38 percent of the
annual rice production.
“We hope it will rain soon,” said
ASM Sishnabi Mandal, a grower in Dinajpur.
Mandal, who has cultivated aman on
over two acres of land, said he and his neighbours had to depend on water pumps
to irrigate fields before transplanting seedlings this monsoon.
“If the situation does not change
in two to three weeks, we will have a problem,” he added.
But irrigation increases the
production costs for growers.
Mohammad Motaleb, a small farmer in
Kaunia of the northwest district Rangpur, has already spent over Tk 2,000 for
irrigation to prepare 38 decimals out of his 75 decimals of land for
transplantation of aman seedlings.
At the same time, the labour cost
has been high at Tk 400. “Our cost is rising but the prices of paddy are not rising
to that extent,” he added.
Md Shahjahan Kabir, director
general of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), said this is the
period of vegetative growth of paddy and the yield would be affected in the
absence of proper vegetative growth.
“We are suggesting farmers start
irrigating fields without waiting for rainfall,” he said, adding that
irrigation pumps under the Barind Multipurpose Development Authority in the
northwest have started to help farmers irrigate their fields. Water is also
being brought in through Teesta barrage to increase the flow in rivers in the
Rangpur region, he added.
Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik, a
meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorologist Department, said rainfall is
likely to increase from tomorrow but the intensity may be low.
The Bangladesh Meteorologist
Department in its yesterday's forecast said light to moderate rain or thunder
showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at many places
over Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, Sylhet and Dhaka divisions and a few places
over Rangpur, Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions.
Mild heat wave is sweeping over the
Rangpur division and the regions of Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogra, Dhaka, Mymensingh,
Sylhet and Chuadanga and it may abate.
“We see rains but it is too scanty
to make the earth wet,” said Bhutto Mia, a grower at Fulchhari in Gaibandha
district.
Inadequate rainfall will lead to a
rise in weeds in the field and a risk pest infestation, he added.
Farmers are crying out for water to
irrigate croplands a year after many of them suffered for floods.
At this time last year, floods
submerged croplands and neighbourhoods up north.
The Department of Agricultural
Extension has targeted transplantation of aman paddy on 53 lakh hectares this
year.
So far, plantation has been completed
on 66 percent of the area, said DAE Director General Mohammad Mohsin, adding
that transplantation has almost been completed in north Bengal, the country's
main crop zone.

Purchase this Report:
Marked by its versatility, a camera works
somewhat like the human eye. It captures reflected light from objects through a
camera lens and directs those light rays into an image.
Alhazen (Ibn Al-Haytham), a great authority on optics in the middle Ages who lived around 1000 AD, invented the first pinhole camera which we know as the Camera Obscura.
Photography as we know it today began in the late 1830s in France. Henry Talbot, a contemporary of Daguerre, invented the first negative by which multiple positives were made. He went on to develop the three primary elements of photography: developing, fixing, and printing.
Photography was only for professionals or the very rich until George Eastman started a company called Kodak in the 1880s. In 1889, he invented film with a base that was flexible, unbreakable, and could be rolled. By 1991, Kodak had produced the first digital camera advanced enough to be used successfully by professionals.
Photography
in Indian Context
Earlier
in the ’80s and ’90s, parents and students had only two choices for their
careers –engineering or medicine. However, due to rapid technological changes,
career choices have widened and parents too began encouraging their children to
pursue photography. This year itself, JNAFU saw their BFA course
receive a record number of applications for admission to photography course
with over 320 students writing for the allotted 45 seats.
There is 100 per cent placement available for the students after completion of their course, as press photographers, camera-persons for TV channels, in film industry, etc. There are also placements in DRDO, NRSA, BDL, Medical College, NAARM, NIRD, RICE Research, SORGAM Project and also in Doordarshan. There are many still who are also interested in starting their own business as entrepreneurs. They have started their own ventures as Wedding Photographers, Advertising Photographers, Event Coverage Personals, ECommerce, Editing and even owning Photo Color Labs.
Umpteen opportunities
Many private schools are venturing into the area of Photography and Filmmaking. Annapoorna Film School, Rama Naidu Film School, DigiQuest Institute, Arena Multimedia, Hamstech, etc., have started their courses in Photography and Filmmaking to name a few.
The time seems to be viable for a career in photography. In Telangana, there are two premier Institutes, viz., JNAFAU College of Fine Arts and SV College of Fine Arts. They offer regular 4-year and 3-year Bachelors’ programmes respectively.
We see the trend of photography and filmmaking amongst most-in-demand fields. People involved in these fields seem to enjoy what they are doing without minding the long hours they put in.
The technological developments in digital photography paved the way for the somewhat expensive profession in the 1980s to become easily accessible for all with even mobile phones coming up with state-of-the-art cameras. The ubiquity of the photographic image has perhaps created an oppressive presence in everyday life!

Indian scientists help decode wheat genome
Eighteen Indian scientists play a crucial role in cracking the
genetic code of wheat – the world's most widely cultivated crop.
The genetic information, scientists say, would help Indian plant breeders create better wheat varieties capable of tolerating heat and drought without compromising the yield.
This comes four years after International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium with 2,400 members in 68 countries published the first draft of the genome sequencing.
Researchers from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Delhi University South Campus and Indian Council of Agriculture Research's National Research Centre on Plant Biotechnology are part of the international consortium.
“In the draft sequence, only 60% of the genome was covered. Also, it was a floating sequence as genes were not attributed to specific chromosomes. The work is now complete with 95% coverage area besides having the precise location of 107,891 genes and of more than 4 million molecular markers,” ICAR national professor N K Singh, a key member of the team, told DH.
Singh and his colleague at the ICAR research centre and Delhi University were also a part of another global effort to map the rice genome that culminated in 2005 with the publication of the rice genome map. “But wheat is far more complex and the genome size is 40 times larger than rice,” he observed.
India's responsibility was to map Chromosome-2A.
Sequencing the bread wheat genome was long considered an impossible task, due to its enormous size, five times larger than the human genome, and complexity — bread wheat has three sub-genomes and more than 85% of the genome is composed of repeated elements.
“The publication of the wheat reference genome is the culmination of the work of many individuals who came together under the banner of the IWGSC to do what was considered impossible,” explained Kellye Eversole, executive director of the IWGSC.
“The method of producing the reference sequence and the principles and policies of the consortium provide a model for sequencing large, complex plant genomes.”
The genetic information, Singh said, would aid to develop wheat varieties that are capable of tolerating heat stress without lowering the yield. With increased ambient temperature, one of the major challenges before Indian wheat scientists is to find out varieties that will not lower its productivity despite a temperature rise of 1-2 degrees Celsius in March.
“A decade after the rice genome map was made public, Indian researchers created at least 20 new rice lines using the genetic information and more varieties are in the pipeline. We expect the same with wheat,” Singh said.
“Cracking of the bread wheat genome will go a long way in developing climate-resilient wheat and help tide over the possible impact of climate change on farm output,” said Union Science Minister Harsh Vardhan.
The project that began in 2010 was supported by the Department of Biotechnology.
The Wheat Genome Sequence was published in the August 17 issue of the journal Science. On the same date of six additional publications describing and using the reference sequence resource, appeared in the same issue of Science, Science Advances and Genome Biology.
A key crop for food security, wheat is the staple food of more than a third of the global human population and accounts for almost 20% of the total calories and protein consumed by humans worldwide, more than any other single food source. It also serves as an important source of vitamins and minerals.
To meet the future demands of a projected world population of 9.6 billion by 2050, wheat productivity needs to increase by 1.6% each year. In order to preserve biodiversity, water, and nutrient resources, the majority of this increase has to be achieved via crop and trait improvement on land currently cultivated rather than committing new land to cultivation.

FG
rubbishes claim of insufficient bags to stock rice
— 18th August 2018
Okwe Obi, Abuja
The Federal Government has
countered the claim alleging that it wanted to flood the market with rice but
lacked sufficient bags to stock the commodity.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural
Development, Audu Ogbeh, in a statement made available to Daily Sun by the
ministry’s Director of Information, Tolu Makinde, on Friday, said such a
statement could only emanate from mischief-makers believed to be enemies of the
present administration.
Ogbeh, however, appealed to
Nigerians to jettison the claim. Said he, “The trending lie will not have
merited our comment but for the fact that many well-meaning Nigerians have
called to ascertain the veracity of the statement.”
“The story indeed is a wicked lie
meant to cause mischief by merchants of falsehood; as the Honorable Minister
never made any such statement.
“Those peddling this falsehood as
expected, could not supply the date, venue and occasion where the minister made
the purported statement.
“The truth of the matter is that
the false claim is not new as it first appeared in the social media last year
without any impact; and that the story was being recycled apparently to cause
mischief.
“Members of the public are
enjoined to discountenance the news as being outright lie emanating from
infertile brain of ghost writers and mischief makers,” he added.

Farmer-leaders from Mindanao have
signified their support for the application of modern biotechnology tools in
agriculture, even as they keenly await the commercial release of “Pinoy biotech
crops.”
Twenty-eight farmer-leaders from
six regions in Mindanao, including the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao,
added their signatures to more than 200 other previous signatories in the
“Declaration of Support for the Application of Biotechnology in Agriculture.”
The event coincided with a recent
seminar on biotechnology on Camiguin Island in Northern Mindanao that was
organized by the Asian Farmers Regional Network (Asfarnet) Philippines with the
Biotech Program Office of the Department of Agriculture.
During the seminar, the
farmer-leaders were briefed by scientists about traditional plant-breeding
processes, as well as the current application of modern biotechnology tools
through genetic engineering.
Both human and natural selection
processes, according to Prof. Floro Dalapag, a geneticist-plant breeder from
Xavier University, have led to the development of, for example, broccoli,
cauliflower, kohlrabi, Brussel sprouts and the familiar head cabbage as
variants of a common wild species of cabbage (Brassica oleracea).
He explained that, with advances
in biotechnology tools, plant breeding has become more precise through genetic
modification.
Dr. Rey Ordonio, a plant
molecular geneticist from Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) and
project leader of the Philippines’s collaborative Golden Rice Project with the
International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), provided updates on the research
and development of Golden Rice.
He said Golden Rice has been
sucessfully developed to contain beta carotene and provide 30 percent to 50
percent of the estimated average requirement for vitamin A.
The use of Golden Rice shall be a
complementary measure to curb the country’s vitamin A deficiency problem,
according to Ordonio.
Data from the eighth National
Nutrition Survey in 2013 of the Food and Nutrition Research of the Department
of Science and Technology showed that 20.4 percent of Filipinos are affected by
vitamin A deficiency. This includes 2.1 million children aged 6 months to 5
years old, and half a million pregnant and lactating women.
Meanwhile, testing by
thePhilRice and IRRI has indicated that Golden Rice is as safe and nutritious
as any other rice. It has been found to be nontoxic and nonallergenic.
Three international bodies
namely, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand in August 2017, Health Canada
in March 2018 and US Food and Drug Administration in May 2018 have attested to
the food safety and nutritional quality of Golden Rice.
Moreover, the Golden Rice has
been found to perform well in the field and yields as much as any local inbred
rice variety.
Well aware of the many serious
challenges in agriculture and food production, such as dwindling farmlands,
crop damage from pests and diseases and the constant threat of flooding, the
farmer-leaders hailed the potential contribution of modern biotechnology to
sustainable food production and food security, as well as in poverty
alleviation and environmental health.
Edwin Paraluman, one of the
earliest users of genetically modified (GM) Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)
corn and chairman of the Philippine Farmers Advisory Board, attested to the
yield and income benefits of GM corn.
From his previous subsistence
corn farming and much use of pesticides, he now enjoys bumper crops from the
family’s cornfields in South Cotabato. No longer a poor, long-suffering farmer
hounded by uncertainties at the farm, he now enjoys financial freedom, with
bright business prospects for new agri-enterprises.
Dahlia Non, a Church lay leader
who served as member of the local Biosafety Committee during the field trials
of Bt corn in Tampakan, South Cotabato, in the 1990s, recounted the questions
and issues that hounded her during that time.
Now, she says South Cotabato is
practically “GM corn country” because farmers have seen the field and yield
performance of Bt corn.
The farmer-leaders noted that
local research institutions like the Institute of Plant Breeding at the
University of the Philippines Los Baños and Philippine Fiber Development
Authority, besides the PhilRice, have already developed modern biotechnology
crops that are in various stages of required testing.
Among these “Pinoy biotech crops”
are fruit and shoot borer-resistant eggplant (Bt eggplant), delayed ripening
and papaya ringspot virus-resistant papaya and bollworm-resistant cotton (Bt
cotton).
They urged “local government
hosts to support the endeavor that will bring benefits to farmers and
consumers, and their future generations.”
They also vowed to keep
themselves “updated on science-based and factual information,” so as to “become
partners in policy and decision-making on the use of agri-biotechnology to
attain food sustainability and food security.” The farmer-leaders expressed
“support for products of modern biotechnology as component of a long-term and
sustainable strategy that is better for the environment, better for the farmers
and better for consumer health.”
Headed by Reynaldo Cabanao in the
Philippines and Paraluman in Asia, Asfarnet started in 2003 after a
capacity-building workshop in the Philippines attended by farmers from India,
Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.

The term
‘Photography’ was first coined by Sir John FW Herschel in 1839. It is a method
of recording images by the action of light, or related radiation, on a
sensitive material. Marked by its versatility, a camera works somewhat like the
human eye. It captures reflected light from objects through a camera lens and
directs those light rays into an image.Alhazen (Ibn Al-Haytham), a great authority on optics in the middle Ages who lived around 1000 AD, invented the first pinhole camera which we know as the Camera Obscura.

Farmers sign
support for biotechnology
August 19, 2018

Biotechnology in Agriculture.”
Story & Photo by Ginny
N. Enriquez / Special to the BusinessMirror
During the seminar, the farmer-leaders
were briefed by scientists about traditional plant-breeding processes, as well
as the current application of modern biotechnology tools through genetic
engineering.
They also vowed to keep
themselves “updated on science-based and factual information,” so as to “become
partners in policy and decision-making on the use of agri-biotechnology to
attain food sustainability and food security.” The farmer-leaders
expressed “support for products of modern biotechnology as component of a
long-term and sustainable strategy that is better for the environment, better
for the farmers and better for consumer health.”
SCIENTISTS: CONTAINED HEAVY METALS IN
CHILDREN’S BREAKFASTS PROVOKE CANCER
| August 18, 2018 | Science | No Comments
A recent
study showed that canned fruits and vegetables, and packaged products contain
hazardous elements.
More
than 70% of the studied types of baby food has a great level of heavy metals:
cadmium, lead and inorganic arsenic. After analyzing 50 brands, researchers
found that 15 food products for children are a potential risk to the child’s
health, regularly consuming at least one serving per day.
The researchers
examined Breakfast of chicken and rice, red beans, “Gerber chicken and rice”
Breakfast with Turkey and rice, stewed meat with vegetables, canned pears,
blackberries, carrots, peas, sweet potatoes and more. Most of the products had
the mark “organic”, but this did not mean that they are safe and fit for
consumption. Their heavy metal had a long term effect, this led to serious
illnesses in the form of cancer and the deterioration of mental abilities, not
counting the potential side effects.

Chinese scientists discover gene helping rice
adapt to cold climate
Source:
Xinhua| 2018-08-18 22:16:08|Editor: Lu Hui
BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists have found a
gene which plays an important role in helping rice, originating in warm
southern China, expand to the relatively cold northern regions.
Rices grown in Asia include two subspecies: indica rice and
japonica rice. The heat-resistant indica rice is mainly planted in southern
China, as well as the tropical and subtropical areas in South Asia and
Southeast Asia, while the japonica rice, after nearly 10,000 years of
domestication and selection, can tolerate cold weather and has been expanded to
northern China and the temperate zones in Northeast Asia.
After analyzing 202 rice samples from various growing regions
around the world collected by the Department of Agriculture of the United
States, Chinese researchers at the Institute of Genetics and Development
Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences identified a gene, bZIP73,
associated with cold tolerance.
The researchers believe the gene has facilitated the adaptation
of rice to low temperatures.
Rice is one of the most important cereal crops feeding more than
half of the world's population. Cold stress is a major factor limiting
production and geographic distribution of rice, said Chu Chengcai, a lead
scientist in the research.
The discovery may help breed new rice varieties which can grow
in high latitude and high altitude regions, Chu said.
The research was published in the latest issue of the journal
Nature Communications.
Popular baby foods contain 'worrisome
levels' of heavy metals, study finds
'Consumer Reports' finds heavy metals in baby foods
A new report published by Consumer Reports found
"concerning levels" of heavy metals in some popular baby food
products. What baby foods are in question and how dangerous are they to your
child's health?
A new Consumer Reports study found many types of food commonly
eaten by babies and toddlers -- such as packaged entrees, fruits and vegetables
-- contained “measurable levels” of certain heavy metals.
What’s more, nearly 70 percent of the products tested contained
“worrisome levels” of at least one of the heavy metals -- lead, cadmium or
inorganic arsenic -- Consumer Reports researchers
said.
Consumer Reports scientists recently studied 50 different
packaged foods made for the young children, testing three samples of each.
Many of those tested were popular brands such as Gerber and
Beech Nut, but researchers noted that the findings should be interpreted as a
"spot check of the market and should not be used to draw definitive
conclusions about specific brands."
Still, of the brands and samples studied, “15 of the foods would
pose potential health risks to a child regularly eating just one serving or
less per day.”
Those 15 food items include: Earth's Best Organic Chicken &
Brown Rice; Earth's Best Turkey, Red Beans and Brown Rice; Gerber Chicken &
Rice; Gerber Turkey & Rice; Sprout Organic Baby Food Garden Vegetables
Brown Rice with Turkey; Gerber Lil' Meals White Turkey Stew with Rice &
Vegetables; Gerber Carrot, Pear & Blackberry; Gerber Carrots Peas &
Corn with Lil' Bits; Plum Organics Just Sweet Potato Organic Baby Food;
Beech-Nut Classics Sweet Potatoes; Earth's Best Organic Sweet Potatoes, 1st
Stage; Earth's Best Organic Whole Grain Rice Cereal; Earth's Best Organic Sunny
Days Snack Bars, Strawberry; Happy Bab Organics Superfood Puffs, Apple &
Broccoli; and Happy Baby Organics Superfood Puffs, Purple Carrot &
Blueberry.
Researchers also determined baby and toddler foods labeled as
"organic" did not mean these products were safer or contained less
heavy metals than non-organic foods.
The effects from these heavy metals are long-term, not
short-term, according to the Consumer Reports study. The long-term effects can
result in serious complications, such as different types of cancer, type 2
diabetes and cognitive issues, among other potential side effects.
"These heavy metals
shouldn’t be in food, period. They can damage the nervous system, cause cancer,
and harm children's development,” James Dickerson, PhD, and Consumer
Reports' chief scientific officer, told WebMD.
“These toxins can remain in your body for years,” Tunde Akinleye,
a Consumer Reports’ Food Safety Division chemist who led the testing, said in
the report.
Despite popular belief, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) does not currently have any strict regulatory guidelines of what levels
of heavy metals found in these baby and toddler foods -- which come from water
and soil contaminated through the use of pesticides, for example -- are
acceptable.

| August 17, 2018 | Science |
A fresh study says that the
artificial decrease in air temperature will have a positive impact on yields.
Evidence of the eruption of volcanoes.
One of their main threats, which
could be global warming on Earth, is the decline in yields. The greenhouse
effect, the ozone hole and the huge amount of harmful emissions into the
atmosphere if not destroy, it will significantly harm the development of the
major source of calories for mankind – wheat, rice, soybean, maize and
different crops.
To avoid this, some scientists
propose to intervene in the natural processes of thermoregulation and use
geoengineering. For example, to reduce the penetration of sunlight, the
aircraft in the lower atmosphere, spraying sulfur dioxide and sea water.
It is expected that such measures
will be more effective, much cheaper and faster will be able to lower the
temperature than to reduce the harmful emissions and other legislative
restrictions.
The authors of an article
published recently in the journal Nature, have in this respect a different
point of view. To understand how the increasing reflectivity of the atmosphere
will affect crop species, scientists have analyzed some of the most powerful
volcanic eruptions in the 20th century – mount Pinatubo (Philippines, 1991) and
the volcano El Chichon (Mexico, 1982).
Then hot volcanic ash and gases
in a large number fall into the atmosphere, preventing the passage of sunlight.
The effects of the El Chichon was modest, but Pinatubo was able to reflect a
2.5% solar thermal energy and a natural way cooled the Earth more than year (at
the cost of hundreds of human lives, of course).
Paradoxically, however, while
9.3% fall in harvest of soybean and rice crops, but wheat was injured by 4.8%.
It turned out, the deceleration of the solar energy has weakened one of the
most important life processes of plants – photosynthesis.
It is now trying to prove the
researchers in their work: the cooling of the superheated Earth does not
necessarily mean benefit for the harvest.
“Comparing geoengineering with
experimental surgery, our results show that the side effects are as bad as from
the classical treatment,” says study leader, PhD, University of California,
Berkeley Jonathan Proctor. “We don’t know enough about the consequences of
geoengineering to assess who will win, who will be harmed and to what degree.
All of these factors are extremely important for the adoption of such a
strategy with global implications”.
In fact, the authors compared two
models: the first is when we start to slowly reduce harmful emissions, but the
temperature will continue to rise; and second, when the amount of harmful
emissions will remain the same, but we artificially reduce the effects of the
Sun on the Earth’s surface.
If scientists are right in
Parallels with eruptions – both scenarios are equally negative impact on
productivity.
Although, researcher of
geoengineering from Rutgers University Alan Timid believes that the development
of agriculture can significantly change the situation: “a Detailed study of the
present and future of agriculture, including new equipment, seeds and
fertilizers, can bring the desired results. Since 1991 there has been a
considerable growth of agriculture, but this article is not pointed out” he
commented to the publication Earther.
However, the authors of the
“Assessment of the global impacts of geoengineering on agriculture in
comparison with the eruptions of the volcanoes” to emphasize that
geoengineering is at an early stage, because so far there are only theoretical
projects and not one designed and tested devices for implementing such methods.
Gernot Wagner is studying
geoengineering at Harvard, thinks that volcanoes, this is only an example of
short-term effects of lowering the temperature. Artificial change of the
atmosphere is a long – term project, which will be applied across the Board and
we wouldn’t be able to stop.
And the Washington Post reporter
Joel Achenbach writes, “When volcanic ash enters the atmosphere – it doesn’t
remain there forever. Much of this material migrates to the poles and gradually
accumulates there, before returning to Earth. And to artificially maintain in
the atmosphere, the stocks of substances that stop the sun’s rays, the future
generation will have to continue the project without interruption. Otherwise,
the temperature can ride almost every night.”
Of course, now we can safely say
that in the near future nobody will prick the doping in the cloud, because
apart from the lack of real projects, the planet share nearly 200 political
States. At least they’ll have to coordinate the controls of this giant
air-conditioning, not to mention where exactly to implement this plan, who is
obliged to follow, support, Finance, etc.
Moreover, the President of the
United States (the country that owns nearly a quarter of the UN budget), Donald
trump and does believe that global warming is an invention of scientists for
pumping money from the budget:
“In the East may be one of the
coldest New years in history. You may want to use some good old global warming,
which is our, not other countries, I wanted to give trillions of dollars. Dress
warmly!”
Popular baby foods contain 'worrisome levels' of heavy metals, study
finds
A
new report published by Consumer Reports found "concerning levels" of
heavy metals in some popular baby food products. What baby foods are in
question and how dangerous are they to your child's health?
A
new Consumer Reports study found many types of food commonly eaten by babies
and toddlers -- such as packaged entrees, fruits and vegetables -- contained
“measurable levels” of certain heavy metals.
What’s more, nearly 70 percent of
the products tested contained “worrisome levels” of at least one of the heavy
metals -- lead, cadmium or inorganic arsenic -- Consumer Reports researchers
said.
Consumer
Reports scientists recently studied 50 different packaged foods made for the
young children, testing three samples of each.
Many
of those tested were popular brands such as Gerber and Beech Nut, but
researchers noted that the findings should be interpreted as a "spot check
of the market and should not be used to draw definitive conclusions about
specific brands."
Still,
of the brands and samples studied, “15 of the foods would pose potential health
risks to a child regularly eating just one serving or less per day.”
Those
15 food items include: Earth's Best Organic Chicken & Brown Rice; Earth's
Best Turkey, Red Beans and Brown Rice; Gerber Chicken & Rice; Gerber Turkey
& Rice; Sprout Organic Baby Food Garden Vegetables Brown Rice with Turkey;
Gerber Lil' Meals White Turkey Stew with Rice & Vegetables; Gerber Carrot,
Pear & Blackberry; Gerber Carrots Peas & Corn with Lil' Bits; Plum
Organics Just Sweet Potato Organic Baby Food; Beech-Nut Classics Sweet
Potatoes; Earth's Best Organic Sweet Potatoes, 1st Stage; Earth's Best Organic
Whole Grain Rice Cereal; Earth's Best Organic Sunny Days Snack Bars,
Strawberry; Happy Bab Organics Superfood Puffs, Apple & Broccoli; and Happy
Baby Organics Superfood Puffs, Purple Carrot & Blueberry.
Researchers
also determined baby and toddler foods labeled as "organic" did not
mean these products were safer or contained less heavy metals than non-organic
foods.
The
effects from these heavy metals are long-term, not short-term, according to the
Consumer Reports study. The long-term effects can result in serious
complications, such as different types of cancer, type 2 diabetes and cognitive
issues, among other potential side effects.
"These heavy metals
shouldn’t be in food, period. They can damage the nervous system, cause cancer,
and harm children's development,” James Dickerson, PhD, and Consumer
Reports' chief scientific officer, told WebMD.
“These
toxins can remain in your body for years,” Tunde Akinleye, a Consumer Reports’
Food Safety Division chemist who led the testing, said in the report.
Despite
popular belief, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not currently
have any strict regulatory guidelines of what levels of heavy metals found in
these baby and toddler foods -- which come from water and soil contaminated
through the use of pesticides, for example -- are acceptable.
"These heavy metals shouldn’t
be in food, period."
-
James Dickerson
When
Consumer Reports contacted the FDA with the findings, the agency said it “has
made this a priority and is working to reduce the health risks these elements
present, especially to those most vulnerable: children.” WebMd reported that
the FDA plans to “finalize new guidelines” regarding these levels by the end of
the year.
All
of the baby food manufacturers that were included in the study were also
contacted, many of which said they would support stricter guidelines regarding
heavy metals in baby and toddler food, according to Consumer
Reports.
As
for what parents can do to lessen their child’s risk of ingesting some of these
heavy metals, Consumer Reports researchers recommend limiting the amount of
rice cereal in your infant’s diet, think about choosing white rice over brown
(the latter had higher levels of inorganic arsenic), limiting packaged snacks
(such as rice cakes and chips), limit a child’s fruit juice intake (such as
apple and grape juice), and limit chocolate intake (cocoa powder can contain
heavy metals such as lead, according to the study).
More suggestions -- such as
choosing snacks like bananas, hard-boiled eggs and strawberries instead, as
these foods, among others, contain low levels of heavy metals -- can be found here.

Indian scientists help decode wheat genome
Kalyan Ray, DH
News Service, New
Delhi,
- Aug 19 2018, 20:00pm ist
- updated: Aug 19 2018, 22:36pm ist
